Start with the symptom
Most Tacoma gutter problems trace back to five causes: sealant that has failed at a seam, hangers pulling out of old wood, a run that has lost its pitch, a blocked or crushed downspout, or a gutter too small for the roof above it. Each has a specific fix, and most are repairs, not replacements.

| What you see | Usual cause | The fix | Repair or replace? |
|---|---|---|---|
Drips at a corner or end cap | Sealant at the joint has failed after years of wet winters and dry summers, or a rivet has worked loose. | Clean the joint, re-rivet and reseal it. Replace the corner piece or end cap if it’s split. | Repair. One bad joint is a small fix. |
Sagging or pulling away from the house | Spikes backing out of old rafter tails, hangers spaced too far apart, or soft fascia behind the gutter. | Check the board first, then re-hang the run on hidden hangers at closer spacing. | Repair, unless the run is kinked or split. |
Water standing in the trough, or plants growing there | The run has lost its pitch from a bent hanger or settling, so water can’t reach the outlet. | Reset the slope toward the downspout and replace any bent hangers. | Repair.Pitch is adjustable on a sound gutter. |
Overflow in steady rain, even right after a cleaning | Too few downspouts for the roof plane, a valley pouring into one corner, or a gutter too small for the roof. | Add an outlet and downspout, or a splash guard at the valley. Upsize if the whole system is too small. | Depends.Undersized everywhere means replacement. |
Water running down behind the gutter | No drip edge or gutter apron at the roof edge, or the gutter hung too low on the fascia. | Add flashing behind the gutter and reset it at the right height. | Repair.Fix it before the fascia softens. |
Downspout leaking, crushed or disconnected | Bent elbows, loose straps, or a buried drain line below that has clogged and backs water up. | Rebuild elbows and sections, re-strap, then flush the drain line or reroute it above ground. | Repair.Downspouts are the cheapest part to fix. |
Sections bent or torn off after a windstorm | Wind gusts and falling branches, often on runs already loosened by soft wood. | Replace the damaged sections to match the profile and color, and re-hang what’s left on solid wood. | Depends.Repair if the rest of the system is sound. |
Dark, soft or peeling fascia | Years of overflow, drips behind the gutter or leaking joints soaking the board. | Find the water source first. Soft wood is repaired before any gutter goes back up. | Often replace.Widespread rot usually means the system is due. |

October storms
Tacoma averages 1.57 inches of rain in September, 4.09 inches in October and 6.50 inches in November. After a dry summer, that first stretch of steady rain is when cracked sealant, loose hangers and blocked outlets show up, usually all in the same week.
Gusts and branches from tall firs bend runs and pull hangers out of soft fascia.
Big-leaf maples drop in October and November. Wet leaves add weight and block outlets, so sags and overflow follow.
July and August average 1.38 inches combined. Sealant that cracked over summer starts dripping with the first storm.
Rain data: NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 monthly normals, Tacoma No. 1 station. Average year: 40.81 inches.
Downspout repair
If water backs out of a downspout joint, bubbles up in the lawn or pools at the foundation, the problem is usually below the gutter: a crushed elbow, a loose section or a buried drain line that has clogged or broken. On many older Tacoma lots, downspouts were tied into those buried lines decades ago.
A hose in the gutter shows where water really leaves the system, not just where the stain is.
Crushed elbows, split sections and loose straps are replaced and re-fastened to the wall.
If water backs up at ground level, we flush the drain line and check that it actually drains.
A broken line can be bypassed: the downspout goes onto an extension or splash block that carries water away from the foundation.
Permit check: the City of Tacoma requires a permit for work on a private stormwater system connected to the City’s network, so replacing a buried line may need one. See Tacoma’s stormwater permits.

On a house built before 1970, the fascia board behind the gutter has often taken decades of small drips. If that wood is soft, new hangers won’t hold and the gutter sags again within a season. So the board gets checked, and soft sections get dealt with, before any gutter goes back up.
Stains on the board below the gutter line mean water has been getting behind it.
Old spike-and-ferrule hangers loosen in aged wood and let the run drop at the ends.
If a re-hung gutter droops again, the wood behind it is the problem, not the hanger.
We mark and photograph the soft sections and spell out in the written estimate what the board needs before the gutter is re-hung. In the North Slope, Stadium-Seminary and other historic districts, we match replacement sections to the existing profile and trim color where we can.
One or two local problems on a sound gutter are a repair. The same failure showing up across the system, metal rusting through, or clean gutters that still overflow mean replacement is the better spend. We’ll tell you which one you’re looking at, and price both if it’s close.
Yes: Repair it.A leaking corner, one sagging run or a crushed downspout is local.
No: Lean toward replacing.Leaks at joint after joint mean the whole system is aging.
Yes: Repair it.Dents and loose hangers on solid aluminum are fixable.
No: Replace those runs.Rust-through, splits and kinked long runs don’t take a lasting patch.
Yes: Repair it.If it only overflows when clogged, cleaning and a repair do the job.
No: Replace and upsize. If clean gutters still overflow, they’re too small for the roof.
How a repair works
Photos of the problem spot and the roofline are often enough to price a repair.
Most estimates come back the next day, with what gets resealed, re-hung or replaced spelled out.
We run water through the repaired run and every downspout before we leave.
You see the work, plus anything else on the system we’d keep an eye on.
We don’t publish flat repair prices, because a resealed corner and a re-hung 40-foot run are very different jobs. Gutter repair cost in Tacoma comes down to the repair itself, how much of the system needs it, height and access, the fascia behind it and the downspouts below. The online estimator works from your actual roofline.
Price my repair onlineResealing an end cap is small. Re-hanging long runs, resetting pitch or replacing bent sections takes more time and material.
One leaking miter is a short visit. Leaks at every joint of a sectional system add up, and may point to replacement.
Two-story homes, steep North Slope lots and tight side yards take more setup than a single-story ranch with clear ground.
Soft wood behind the gutter has to be dealt with first. It’s the one thing an online estimate can’t see.
Rebuilding elbows is quick. Flushing a clogged underground line or rerouting a failed one adds time.
A repair fixes the part that failed. It doesn’t change the size of the system, the trees over it or the roof above it. If one of these is the real problem, we’ll say so before you spend money on a patch.
Resealing and re-pitching won’t make a gutter carry more water than it was built for. Clean gutters that still overflow need upsizing.
Gutter replacementA repair doesn’t keep debris out. Under tall trees you still need cleaning, or guards to cut how often.
Gutter cleaning in TacomaDamaged shingles and flashing are roofer work, and we’ll point them out from the ladder. If moss is lifting shingle edges, start with moss removal.
Roof moss removal in TacomaPatching rust-through or a dozen failing joints rarely lasts. Runs like that are worth replacing.

Call (425) 828-3000It depends on the repair, how many runs need it, story height and access, the fascia behind the gutter and any downspout or drain work. We don’t publish flat prices. Use our online estimator for a range, or send photos for a free written estimate, usually within 24 hours.
Repair when the problem is local: a leaking corner, one sagging run, a crushed downspout. Replace when leaks show up joint after joint, the metal is rusting through, or clean, pitched gutters still overflow because they’re too small for the roof.
Usually, yes. We check the fascia, re-hang the run on solid hangers and replace any section that’s kinked or torn. If several runs came down or the wood behind them is soft, we’ll show you why and price replacement too.
Sometimes. Policies usually cover sudden damage, like a windstorm or a falling branch tearing a gutter down, and not wear, clogs or rust. Check your policy and deductible; for many small repairs the cost is below the deductible anyway.
Yes. We repair seamless and sectional gutters and downspouts, whoever put them up. If a system isn’t worth fixing, we’ll show you why and price replacement too.
Most repairs are done in a single visit of an hour or a few hours, depending on how many runs and downspouts need work. Replacing a full system usually takes a day.
Not if it’s holding water. Tacoma averages more than 6 inches of rain a month from November through January, and a sagging run spills onto the fascia and foundation the whole time. It also gets heavier with every storm.
Work on a private stormwater system connected to the City of Tacoma network needs a City permit, so replacing or rerouting a buried line may need one. When in doubt, call Tacoma Planning & Development Services at (253) 591-5030 before work starts.
